In its latest action, CSB released a 30-minute video that concisely covers the nature of the risk, the absence of federal rules to address the risk, and what appears to be the stubborn resistance of industry to act independently to protect their workers and facilities.

Combustible dust has been in the news for the past few years with spectacular explosions caused by ignition of accumulated dust and dust clouds in a wide variety of facilities. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is doing its best to keep the issue in the forefront. CSB has argued that a patchwork of general worker protection standards at the federal level as well as varying state and local regulations has resulted in inconsistent implementation, inspection, and enforcement with regard to dust hazards. Read this week’s featured article for an update on the status of federal standards and CSB’s efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of combustible dust.
