The EPA recently announced that it plans to award three communities in Mississippi with brownfields grants.

Columbus will receive $400,000. Communitywide hazardous substances grant funds will be used to conduct 15 Phase I and 5 Phase II environmental site assessments. Communitywide petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct 16 Phase I and 6 Phase II environmental site assessments. The city will focus environmental site assessments on three industrial areas that contain numerous brownfields: Yorkville Park, the Warehouse District, and "The Island."
Hernando will also receive $400,000 to conduct 15 Phase I and 5 Phase II environmental site assessments at hazardous substance sites and 16 Phase I and 6 Phase II environmental site assessments at petroleum sites. The city will focus efforts on the eastern gateway to the downtown historic district and an industrial area on the southeast side of the city.
McCombs will use its $400,000 in communitywide hazardous substances and petroleum grant funds to inventory and prioritize sites and conduct between 10 and 12 Phase I and 5 or 6 Phase II environmental site assessments. The city will focus efforts on an Illinois Central/Canadian National Railroad rail yard located along the eastern boundary of the city's central business district.
