EPA's Plating wastewater Guidelines, Phase 1, covering the copper, nickel, chromium and zinc subcategories, were issued in the
Federal Register on March 28, 1974. These complicated regulations help to protect the nation's clean water supply.
Plating wastewater must adhere to the guidelines set forth in writing NPDES permits. The plating wastewater guidelines are essentially formulated on the use of effluent flow X treated pollutant concentration logic. The effluent flow is rated and used on a flow per area plated basis. In the plating wastewater guidelines, three possible methods of calculating the area plated to obtain pollutant limits are outlined.
Due to the diverse nature of the Electroplating Industry it is extremely difficult to follow a discrete, concise set of rules and examples. The essential problem is that the plating guidelines require the person plating the wastewater to correctly determine the total area plated in order to obtain the basis of production for the plant.
The permitter must approach his estimation of area plated very cautiously and be aware of pitfalls in the plater's own estimate of area plated, especially since plating wastewater is such a difficult task and the margin of error is high.
