Solis Urges Safety First

Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis has issued a memo reminding federal departments to keep safety in mind as they pursue projects associated with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). "Under ARRA," she wrote, "your department may be expanding its infrastructure or beginning new construction projects, and I encourage you to take steps to safeguard both federal workers and contractors involved in these efforts."

Solis noted that OSHA may increase inspections of federal worksites as a result. According to the memo, OSHA is focusing its resources to account for the anticipated increase in construction projects and related activities. Agency heads are being encouraged to take advantage of OSHA training opportunities, including a 2-day program for federal employees. It will cover major construction hazards, as well as the safety and health management systems that can help minimize or eliminate the risks. The course will be offered at OSHA education centers across the country.
