E-Waste Exporters Must Notify

If you are an exporter of electronic waste (e-waste), such as televisions and computer monitors, you must submit formal notification to EPA before shipment.

Under EPA's cathode-ray tube (CRT) rule, which became effective in January 2007, exporters shipping used CRTs (broken and intact) to another country for recycling must notify EPA and receive written consent from the receiving country before shipments can be made.

According to EPA, notification must include contact information about the exporter and recycler, and an alternate recycler. It must also include a description of the recycling, frequency and rate of export, means of transport, total quantity of CRTs, and information about transit countries.

The Agency will notify the receiving country and transit countries. When the receiving country consents in writing, EPA will forward the consent to the exporter. You may not ship the CRTs until you receive the consent.

If the receiving country does not consent or withdraws consent, EPA will notify you in writing. You must keep copies of notifications and consents for 3 years following receipt of the consent.
