Boilers and Industrial Furnaces

Regulatory Analysis

Boilers and industrial furnaces (BIF) are a special class of boiler or furnace that burns or processes hazardous waste for the recovery of energy or the incineration of hazardous waste as a method of treatment. The original regulations were primarily administrative, requiring notification and certain waste management practices. EPA has since developed extensive requirements, including rules for emissions controls and permitting. BIFs may be required to comply with provisions under RCRA and the CAA.
