A brownfields site is property where there is a fear of redevelopment because of a known or perceived presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The redevelopment of brownfield contaminated sites provides an increase in local tax bases, facilitates job growth, uses existing infrastructure, and protects undeveloped land. Many states have created voluntary cleanup programs (VCPs) designed to provide liability protection to prospective purchasers, real estate developers, lenders, and others who conduct brownfields cleanup. EPA and states also offer brownfields funding through brownfield grants for brownfields assessment, contaminated site cleanup, and brownfields job training.
