National Summary
Decontamination means the use of physical or chemical means to remove, inactivate, or destroy contaminated particles on a surface or item to the point where they are no longer capable of transmitting contamination, and the surface or item is rendered safe for handling. OSHA has fairly extensive decontamination requirements. Decontamination procedures should be tailored to the specific hazards of the site and may vary in complexity, depending on the hazard and the employee's exposure to the hazard.
