Environmental Impact Statement

National Summary The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires all federal agencies to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for proposed major actions that significantly affect the quality of the human environment. The EIS requirement includes the public in the federal agency decision-making process. Major actions generally are those actions that require substantial planning, timing, resources, or expense.
