State:
Hazardous Air Pollutants

National Summary
The air toxics program established under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments identified 189 (now 188) hazardous air pollutants. These substances are carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins, and they are produced by certain source-specific industries. EPA must identify the chemicals to be controlled and the major source categories of these chemicals. Once the source categories are identified, EPA is responsible for setting maximum achievable control technology (MACT) standards for each category.
