National Summary
As a means of ensuring the proper packaging, shipping, and delivery of hazardous materials, DOT requires that the shipper meet strict labeling, placarding, and marking standards. Labels are graphic representations of the hazard. Each package, container or vehicle must be marked according to applicable DOT regulations. Vehicles containing any quantity of a hazardous material must be placarded on each side and each end with the type of the specific placard for the material being transported.
