Lead

National Summary
Lead is a naturally occurring bluish-gray metal found in small amounts in the earth's crust. It has no characteristic taste or smell. Lead can combine with other chemicals to form what are usually known as lead salts. A number of federal agencies regulate lead to reduce the hazards it presents. The intent is to reduce lead exposure through the use of less toxic materials, monitoring, and prevention. In addition, many states have even more restrictive guidelines than those of the federal government.
