National Summary
The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) has a simple goal: "To assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions...." The Act authorizes the secretary of labor to issue standards that apply to each private sector employer. OSHA encourages states to develop their own safety and health plans, but a state's plan must be approved and at least as stringent as the federal OSH Act. Currently, 23 states and territories have approved plans.
