Sampling

National Summary
A "sample" is defined as a piece of a whole that is selected to represent the quality and nature of the whole. Environmental samples are collected for practical and regulatory reasons, as the inspection of the whole may be too time consuming and expensive for researchers, but quality assurance is required by regulatory agencies. For these reasons, sampling is an integral part of the environmental rules that regulate air emissions, water discharges, and waste management.
