Section 111 of the CAA requires EPA to identify categories of new sources that contribute significantly to air pollution. For these source categories, EPA must set emissions standards that reflect the best technology that has been adequately demonstrated, taking into account non-air-quality impacts and energy requirements. The New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) are air pollution controls that are individually designed for specific types of industries. EPA may find NSPS to be facility design, equipment, work practice, or operational standards. The NSPS, once final, sets the minimum level of control that must be achieved by the source.
