National Summary
A common water quality standard that must be met when discharging wastewater into surface waters is the temperature of the discharged effluent. The NPDES permit program generally requires monitoring the temperature and flow of the discharged water, both as an effluent characteristic during the application process and as a temperature limitation under the permit conditions. Thermal pollution is defined as heated water discharges with the potential to alter the growth and existence of aquatic organisms.
