Surface Impoundments
National Summary
Surface impoundments are one of nine types of hazardous waste land disposal units (LDUs) regulated under RCRA. The LDU regulations are intended to minimize pollution resulting from the disposal of hazardous waste in or on the land. While the RCRA Subtitle C surface impoundment regulations allow for the treatment, storage, or disposal of hazardous waste in these LDUs, surface impoundments are used primarily for storage or treatment of hazardous wastes rather than for disposal of hazardous waste.
