CERCLA/Superfund
National Summary
Superfund is the federal government's program to clean up uncontrolled hazardous waste sites, or "superfund sites," in the United States. Superfund is the name of both the environmental program established to address abandoned hazardous waste sites and also the name of the fund established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA). CERCLA was enacted in response to the discovery of toxic waste dumps such as Love Canal and Times Beach in the 1970s. Under CERCLA and Superfund, EPA is able to facilitate the cleanup of contaminated sites and compel responsible parties to perform cleanups or reimburse the government for cleanups it finances.
